Questions about specific projects
Home & Room Additions
Is a home addition or a renovation the better fit?
If your rooms are the right size but need updating, a renovation may be what you want. If you need more space than the house has, an addition adds it. Many projects involve both, such as a new room plus an update to the room beside it. Describe your situation by phone or email and we can talk it through.
What should I decide before I call about an addition?
It helps to know what the new space is for, roughly how big you imagine it, a budget range and a target timeframe. You do not need final answers. A rough idea is enough to start the conversation.
How long does a home addition take?
There is no single answer. Timing depends on the size of the addition, the design, the finishes and your property. We cannot responsibly give a timeline without knowing your project, so describe what you have in mind when you call.
Home Renovations
Can I renovate one room at a time?
Often that is a sensible approach. The right scope depends on your house and your goals, so describe your plan when you call and we can talk through which room to begin with. If you have a longer plan in mind, mention it, because it can shape where to start.
What is the difference between a renovation and a remodel?
The terms overlap. Renovation usually means updating existing space, while remodeling often means changing the layout or function of a room. On this site, kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling have their own pages, and home renovations covers the wider range of updates, including whole-home work.
Does the age of my house matter?
It can. Older homes may raise questions once work begins, and knowing roughly when yours was built helps frame the first conversation.
Kitchen Remodeling
Where should I start with a kitchen remodel?
Start with what is not working: layout, storage, lighting or the way people move through the room. A short list of frustrations and a list of things you want to keep gives us something concrete to talk through.
What affects the cost of a kitchen remodel?
Mostly the size of the room, how much the layout changes, and the cabinets, counters, appliances and finishes you choose. Moving plumbing or electrical adds to the scope. We cannot give a price without knowing your kitchen, so describe your project when you call.
Can I remodel only part of my kitchen?
A kitchen remodel can be limited or full. What makes sense depends on what you want to change and the condition of the rest of the room. Describe it when you call and we can talk it through.
Bathroom Remodeling
Can I remodel just one bathroom?
A project can cover one bathroom or several. If you are thinking about more than one, tell us which matters most, because that is a good place to begin the conversation.
What should I decide before I call about a bathroom remodel?
It helps to know who uses the room, what bothers you about it today and what you want to keep. A rough budget range and target timeframe are also useful. You do not need final answers to start.
What affects the cost of a bathroom remodel?
Mostly the size of the room, whether fixtures move, and the tile, fixtures and finishes you choose. What is behind the walls and floors can also affect the scope. We cannot give a price without knowing your bathroom, so describe your project when you call.
Freestanding Structures & Outbuildings
How is a freestanding structure different from a home addition?
An addition is attached to the house and shares walls and rooflines with it. A freestanding structure is built separately, so it needs its own plan for location, access and any utilities. Which one fits depends on what you need the space for.
What should I think about before choosing a location?
Consider how you will reach it, how it relates to the house and yard, the distance for any power or water, and any rules that apply to your property, such as deed restrictions or setback requirements. It helps to raise these early.
What kinds of structures do you build?
This service covers structures built separately from the main house. If you have a specific idea, call or email and describe it, and we can tell you whether it is something we take on.
